Industrial Aluminum Alloys: Series Comparison

Compare aluminum alloy series, grade and temper selection, product forms and the details needed for a material quotation.

Stacked aluminum alloy sheets with a heading introducing an alloy series comparison

Aluminum alloy selection starts with the exact grade, product form and temper. The series identifies the alloy family; it does not by itself specify the strength, dimensions or condition of the material you will receive. Browse our aluminum materials catalogue to choose a listed product form before confirming the order specification.

Aluminum alloy series: quick comparison

SeriesMain additionTypical examples and uses
1xxxAt least 99% aluminum1100: formed sheet; 1350: electrical applications
2xxxCopper2024: aircraft structural material
3xxxManganese3003: general sheet and heat exchangers
4xxxSilicon4043: welding filler
5xxxMagnesium5052: sheet fabrication; 5083: marine applications
6xxxMagnesium and silicon6061: structural products; 6063: extrusions
7xxxZinc, with other additions7050 and 7075: high-strength applications

The 2xxx, 6xxx and commonly used 7xxx alloys can be strengthened by heat treatment. The 1xxx, 3xxx and 5xxx families commonly rely on cold working. Review the particular 4xxx grade rather than assigning one heat-treatment rule to the whole family. These are broad selection categories, not guaranteed mechanical properties. See the Aluminum Association alloy and standards overview.

Choose the grade and temper together

A quotation for “6061 aluminum” is incomplete without the form, temper and dimensions. Ask for the full designation used on the drawing, including any stress-relief or processing suffix. Do not compare test values from different tempers or thickness ranges as if they describe the same product.

Before choosing a substitute, identify the requirement that matters most: forming, machining, welding, corrosion exposure, electrical use or mechanical loading. Have the responsible engineer approve a material change where the drawing or application specifies a particular grade and condition.

Plate and sheet

Specify thickness, width, length, flatness, surface requirements and cutting allowance. Start with our 1060 aluminum plate or 6061 aluminum plate listings, then confirm the condition and acceptance requirements for your project.

Machined parts and bar stock

Include the finished drawing and the stock size needed for machining. Compare the available configurations for 6061 aluminum rod and 7075 aluminum round bar. A series name or a product photograph is not enough to approve a material substitution.

Tube and profiles

For tubular material, state outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness and the manufacturing or inspection requirements. Review 6061 aluminum pipe with those requirements in hand.

How to request comparable aluminum prices

Compare quotations for the same grade, temper, dimensions, quantity and delivery basis. A generic price per tonne cannot establish the cost of a cut plate, precision bar or small research order. Ask each supplier to identify machining, testing, packaging and freight charges, quote validity and the unit used for pricing.

  • Grade, temper and applicable material specification, including edition if required.
  • Product form, dimensions, tolerances and drawing revision.
  • Quantity, required inspection records and any traceability requirements.
  • Delivery destination, requested schedule and packaging needs.

Material documents and delivery planning

Agree the required material certificate and test results before ordering. Keep the material specification, dimensional acceptance and any additional project requirements distinct so that each can be checked against the supplied batch.

For international orders, provide the destination and intended product use when requesting a quotation. Obtain shipment-specific customs and documentation advice from the responsible logistics or customs professional; a general alloy guide cannot determine the applicable duties or approvals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the strongest alloy always the best choice?

No. Select against the complete drawing and service requirements. Strength is only one part of a decision that may also depend on forming, joining, surface finish and dimensional stability.

Can I order by alloy series alone?

Use the exact grade and temper whenever available. If you are still selecting the material, send the application and drawing for review rather than treating every grade in a series as interchangeable.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send your grade, temper, form, dimensions, quantity and destination, together with the required certificates and drawing. Our purchasing guide explains the information to prepare for an inquiry.
